Galaktik Cancer Squad/The Gathering/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2012 CD Compilation Review

This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  album  from  Galaktik  Cancer  Squad  which  showcases  their  instrumental  approach  to  atmospheric,  progressive  black  metal  over  the  years  with  the  recording  being  released  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  in  2012  and  called  "The  Gathering".

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  thrown  into t he  music  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark,  atmospheric,  psychedelic  and  progressive  sound  to  the  recording  along  with  a  brief  use  of  programming  and  samplers  which  bring  elements  of  electronic  music  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  some  raw  and  primitive  elements  of  black  metal  with  melodic  traditional  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  some  progressive  elements  in  the  riffing  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  and  progressive  sounding  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  enhance  the  progressive  elements  of  the  recording.

Vocals  and  song  writing  are  mostly  absent  from  the  recording  with  the  music  being  mostly  instrumental  except  for  some  parts  and  they  are  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing,  while  the  song  themes  cover  space  and  time,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  dark  and  heavy  sound  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  album.

In  my  opinion t his  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Galaktik  Cancer  Squad  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Surreal  all-Rounder"  "Oceans  Of  Piss  And  Blood'  "Junkie  Assault"  and  "Separation".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
